Electron microscopy has developed into a method for quantitative structural analysis of biological materials in several different imaging modes. The electron tomography approach is particularly useful for reconstructing the 3D structure of macromolecular assemblies in their native environment. The different electron microscopy modes, however, can be used to address many different aspects of biomolecular interaction. Here, the principles of several established modes of electron microscopy will be introduced. Several examples of electron microscopy applied to the study of protein-protein interactions will be given, including the cryo-electron microscopy studies on the protein-DNA junction and the isolation of nuclear pores. The spatial resolution of the various electron microscopy modes will be discussed.[Chronic granulomatous disease. Diagnosis and treatment].
This report describes an adult patient with chronic granulomatous disease who has been receiving IV immunoglobulin since she was diagnosed. She has had only two recurrent pneumonias treated with antibiotics. Her course is reviewed with particular reference to the possibility of immune reconstitution. It is suggested that the immunoglobulin is highly effective in chronic granulomatous disease. It may prevent recurrent pneumonias.In the performance of surgery, it is often desirable to compress or reduce the size of internal organs, tissues and/or membranes to allow for easier access by a surgeon to the area requiring treatment. Reduction of the size of the organs or membranes may be accomplished by percutaneous or other access to the tissue of interest. During the performance of a medical procedure, to reduce the size of internal organs, tissues or membranes, a variety of different types of instruments may be used to compress or reduce the size of such tissues, including but not limited to: staplers, cauterization devices, graspers, scissors and electrosurgical devices.
